Since I first saw Christian Montenegro’s book The Creation, I was fascinated by his unique style of illustration. Looking at his portfolio today, I was pretty surprised of his huge amount of work he did.

Jazz Covers - John Coltrane, Ascension

The Taschen book Jazz Covers seems to be a really interesting inspiration source. On 496 pages it displays a collection of classical vinyl covers from the 1940s to the 1990s.

Custom Kicks Event, Amsterdam

I just came back from Amsterdam where I took part in the Custom Kicks event. After releasing the Custom Kicks book, Maki from Holland organized this live customization event on Spui square. It was great fun drawing on sneakers! Check out some pictures on my Flickr site!

My works featured in novum

Novum

The may issue of the german design magazine novum features a four page article about my work. The magazine first published in 1924 shows graphic works by international designers. I’m glad to be in it!

This is what they write:
“This young designer is probably familiar to attentive novum readers, because we have already mentioned his projects Diet Riot and Generate Magazine. Since then Philipp Zurmöhle has not been idle, and we would now like to devote more space and attention to his work.

Music, he says, is a great source of inspiration for him: »Design and music belong together, because in both areas much is about composition and the creation of moods.« The biggest influence on his feelings and creativity is travel. Something Philipp Zurmöhle has done a lot of. In Hanover he studied visual communication, interspersed by a six-month semester in Japan. Later he did a spell of practical experience in Norway, a country to which he returned after completing his degree and trying out a few jobs in Germany.

Today he works as a graphic and Web designer at Mission Design in Oslo. Not surprisingly, Philipp Zurmöhle admits to no preferences as to areas of design, enjoying instead the challenge of always discovering new things and trying out work in a range of areas. »This gives you new insights, that can then help you in other projects,« he believes. Also, exploring new fields of work and new technologies is important because this variety keeps a designer from getting stuck in a routine, which can only lead to repetition.

For the future, however, he is keen to do more visual design for the music sector, and to design for musicians. He would also like to revive Generate Magazine (www.generate-magazine.com). But who knows what ideas his travel exploits and creative trips will lead to next … cm”

Fraktur Mon Amour

Fraktur Mon Amour

Fraktur Mon Amour by Judith Schalansky is one of my favourite books lately. It shows 300 black letter typefaces and includes 130 of them for free use. The book is nice as a reference and besides that fun to watch how Judith plays around with the typefaces’ characters. Her Flickr collection of gothic type is worth taking a look, too!

Generate Magazine

Generate Magazine

This is my graduation work at university, a new magazine concept. Each article is written on a loose single page. The reader can set up his own library at home with all the articles he likes. This is a way to avoid heavy magazine collections in the shelf in which you never find the one certain article you are searching for. He also can combine and sort the pages in an individual way.The content of Generate Magazine is inspiration in the broadest sense. It can be music, a city you travel to or a nature phenomenon. But it also shows works of other designers and artists who are interviewed about the topic of inspiration. Therefore there are categories like create, travel, play, hear, discover or feel. The articles on the loose pages have a simple layout to just show informative content. Then, on the back there’s an illustration inspired by the topic in the article.Check it out in my cpluv gallery on my portfolio website or on the generate magazine project website
